Bitten by a Bot? Are Bots on Shopify Ruining Your Analytics? A WAF Solution Can Help!
Plagued by bots abandoning carts in your Shopify store?
If you've been hit by the "Bellevue bot" or a similar one that creates abandoned checkout after abandoned checkout then you know the frustration of ruined analytics and the time involved in trying to keep the bot entries out of your email marketing platform.
If you're having this issue, we recommend contacting Shopify support. They may tell you to try an app - most of which won't (can't) work against these types of bot attacks that target checkout.
Shopify does have a bot blocking solution for Plus customers, but it's really targeted at preventing bots from gobbling up all inventory in a product launch (think a big sneaker launch where everyone wants the latest shoes). Once enabled, these can be scheduled for up to 60 minutes at a time...which isn't really want you're probably looking for since you want these bots stopped permanently.
The ultimate solution is a firewall (something provided by Cloudflare, Akamai or a similar company) between the world and your Shopify store. Yes, Shopify has this. However, no one outside of Shopify knows how it's set up or what it's blocking - and it's clearly not blocking these Bellevue bots.
Again, we recommend checking in with Shopify first - maybe they'll be able to mitigate the abandoned checkout bots for you. But if not, you should consider a WAF (firewall).
With a WAF (firewall) your traffic goes to a firewall that you (or a consultant like us) controls and can use to filter and block bad traffic. We work extensively with Cloudflare and have successfully mitigated these bot attacks for our clients.
One of the nice things about setting up a WAF through a consultant like us is that you'll own and control your WAF (firewall) account!
We're happy to provide consulting, DNS management and DNS updates along with WAF setup and management as needed to help you mitigate these annoying bots.
